Five Minute Friday: Rest

A lot can happen in five minutes.

I did something I never do, and took a few moments to sit on the front porch this morning and listen to the neighborhood wake up.

In that time, I:
* heard five different types of birds singing to their Creator
* heard the long, slow, repetitious croak of a frog
* heard the wings flutter from two ducks that flew overhead
* heard the street lamp click off for the day
* heard a dog bark
* felt the cool morning breeze on my face
* saw a flock of birds forming a V
* noticed that the neighbor’s tree is beginning to bloom

Matthew 11:28 says, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”  Weary and heavy laden? Yep, that’s me!  He knows that I have been struggling with my health.  He knows that I am entering a crazy, hectic weekend.  He knows my mind is a blur with details.  He knows that I need

Rest.

As I thought about that verse, the word that stuck out was “give.”  In order to be given something, we have to receive it. I’m so glad I took the time to receive His gift this morning.

  2. That was a beautiful post. I read your list three times. I'm glad you didn't miss experiencing those eight delights in the hustle and bustle of your busy life. Concerning rest, most importantly, your soul is at rest and at peace with the Lord because you've committed your life to Him for time and eternity. It is the pressures and stresses of the daily grind, of being a mom and all of the other roles you fill that wear you down. As I've sat typing this an old hymn came to mind, so I thought I'd share some of the words (below). When you mentioned the "five different types of birds singing to their Creator" at the break of day, I was reminded that we humans, too, were created to praise and glorify God with our daily lives. Read and ponder the words of the hymn below, and may God give you inner rest and renewal as you do so. . . . . .
    Day by day and with each passing moment,
    Strength I find to meet my trials here;
    Trusting in my Father's wise bestowment,
    I've no cause for worry or for fear.
    He whose heart is kind beyond all measure,
    Gives unto each day what He deems best;
    Lovingly its part of pain and pleasure,
    Mingling toil with peace and rest. [End hymn] . . . . .
    Thanks for your thoughtful post, and I do hope you can get some extra sleep tonight!

    1. Thanks, Mom! That hymn is perfect and one of my favorites! I'll do my best to get some extra rest, but with a house full of teenage boys, it could be a bit challenging!! lol :)

  3. I LOVE this!!! Such a wonderful way to describe rest and so unique. Thank you for giving me something totally different to read. I hope your day, on that side of the mountains, was as lovely as ours, over here on this side. Also - Are you by chance going to Beth Moore when she is at Knight Arena in April? I thought I'd ask

    1. Thanks, Debi! I appreciate your encouraging words! Today was beautiful in the valley. Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend Beth Moore as we have something else already planned for that weekend.
